Understanding Pennsylvania Quarterly Estimated Tax Payments

Pennsylvania quarterly estimated tax payments are advance payments toward the state income tax you expect to owe for the year. If you’re self-employed or earn income from a rental property, taxes aren’t always automatically taken out of your income. This can leave you responsible for making estimated payments yourself.

Phoenix Tax Consultants provides tax preparation services to help clients stay on top of their state tax obligations. Here, we explain how Pennsylvania estimated payments work, including when they’re due and how to calculate them.

How Pennsylvania Estimated Tax Payments Work

Pennsylvania uses an income threshold to determine when estimated tax payments are required. The threshold is based on the amount of Pennsylvania-taxable income you expect to receive without employer withholding, and it changes yearly.

If some tax is already being withheld from your income, that amount counts toward what you owe. When the withholding doesn’t cover your full state income tax liability, estimated payments can be used to cover the remaining amount.

Estimated payments commonly affect:

You can check the Pennsylvania Department of Revenue’s estimated tax instructions to find the threshold for your tax year. Your Pennsylvania estimated taxes are separate from any federal estimated taxes you owe.

Estimated Tax Payment Deadlines

Estimated payments are divided into four installments with the following deadlines:

If a deadline falls on a weekend or holiday, the payment is due on the next business day. Missing a deadline or paying less than the required amount can result in an underpayment penalty.

Calculating Your Pennsylvania Estimated Tax Payments

The state’s personal income tax rate is 3.07%. To calculate your estimated tax, start with your expected Pennsylvania-taxable income for the year, apply the 3.07% rate, and subtract any withholding or credits that apply. Divide the remaining amount across the required installments.

For example, if you expect $50,000 in Pennsylvania-taxable income and have no withholding, your estimated state income tax would be $1,535. Divided evenly across four installments, that would be about $383.75 per payment.

The Pennsylvania Department of Revenue provides a worksheet to help you calculate your estimated payments. You can pay the full estimated amount with your first payment or make installments by the applicable deadlines. If your income changes during the year, you can adjust your remaining payments.

You can make your estimated payments online through Pennsylvania’s myPATH system or follow the payment instructions for the applicable PA-40 ES form.

Stay on Track With Your Taxes

Estimated tax payments are easier to manage when you know how much to pay and keep up with each deadline. If your income changes during the year, reviewing your payments can also help you avoid an unexpected balance when it’s time to file your return.
