How Do I Check the Status of My Tax Refund?
You can check the status of your tax refund through the IRS using their online tools, mobile app, or automated phone system. While the process is straightforward, the updates don’t always explain what’s actually happening behind the scenes.
AtPhoenix Tax Consultants, our Chester Springs tax preparation services can help ensure your return is filed correctly. Below, we explain how to check your refund status and what those updates mean.
The Fastest Way to Check Your Tax Refund
There are a few ways to check your refund status. Before checking, keep in mind that the IRS system updates once per day, usually overnight. You’ll also need to enter your information exactly as it appears on your return, including the whole-dollar refund amount.
-
IRS “Where’s My Refund?” tool: Available on the IRS website, this tool lets you check your refund status by entering your Social Security number or ITIN, filing status, exact refund amount, and tax year, or by signing in to your IRS account. Your information will usually appear about a day after filing online or several weeks after mailing a paper return.
-
IRS2Go mobile app: You can also check your refund using the official IRS mobile app. There’s no sign-in required. Enter your Social Security number or ITIN, filing status, and your exact refund amount.
If you’re checking a Pennsylvania state refund, you’ll need to use the myPATH system instead of the IRS tool.
What Your Refund Status Means
The IRS uses a few standard updates to show where your refund is in the process.
- “Return Received” means your return has been accepted and is being processed.
- “Refund Approved” means your refund has been confirmed and is being prepared for payment.
- “Refund Sent” means the IRS has issued your refund, either by direct deposit or mail.
How Long Tax Refunds Usually Take
Refund timing depends on how you file. Most e-filed returns are processed within about three weeks, while mailed returns can take six weeks or longer. Delays can still happen if your return needs corrections, additional review, or includes certain credits that require extra processing time.
What to Do If Your Refund Status Isn’t Changing
If your refund status hasn’t updated, start by checking your details again to make sure everything was entered correctly. You should also watch for any IRS notices or verification requests, as these can pause processing without much explanation.
Delays can happen due to errors or because the return requires additional review. In some cases, this is tied to more complex filings, such as multiple income sources or previous year changes. If your status has been unchanged for an extended period, it may be time to take a closer look at your return.
